Dr. Lawrence Houston Scholarship
The Dr. Lawrence Houston Scholarship is awarded to outstanding student members of NJABPsi who are future mental health trendsetters and advocates for persons-of-color within the larger community.
2021 Student Eligibility Criteria & Review Protocols
Applicants must be actively affiliated/enrolled in an accredited institution of higher learning in the field of Psychology (School/Clinical/Counseling or a related discipline as determined by the scholarship committee) leading to a Master’s or Doctoral level degree.
Applicants must be paid 2021 NJABPsi Student Member (you can pay your $30 dues here and be willing to be an active participant within the larger NJABPsi organization (i.e., student officer, program presenter, engaged in a mentor/mentee relationship with a NJABPsi professional member/Elder, active contributor to the NJABPsi cause of enhancing the emotional well-being of persons-of-color, etc.).
All applications for the Lawrence Houston Scholarship Fund (LHSF) will be reviewed by the LHSF Committee. The Committee will be composed of at least three NJABPsi members appointed by the President and approved by the Executive Board.
First Place prize is $750

The Dr. Mel Gary Student Conference Presentation Award
The Dr. Mel Gary Student Conference Presentation Award provides travel grants to graduate students whose conference presentations have been accepted by a conference organizer. Conference presentations will strengthen students' CVs and consequently, their future ability to compete successfully for employment as psychologists. Additionally, conference attendance will facilitate professional networking and will enable students to explore cutting edge psychological Issues.
This Student Conference Presentation Award: "Donate to Dine," will honor the life and ideals of the late Dr. Melvin (Mel) Gary's legacy as an educator, mentor, and advocate of students and early career psychologists.
Members, relatives, and friends are invited to support Dr. Mel Gary's vision and legacy by purchasing $25 chances, called "Donate to Dine," in order to win up to a $100 reimbursement at a restaurant of the winner's choice, without geographic restriction. One winner will be drawn each year at the NJABPsi annual Family Cookout in June. Attendance is not required to win. The winner may dine at one's chosen restaurant between July 1 and December 31 of each year and submit the original receipt (up to a $100) for reimbursement. Donors may purchase multiple chances.

Donate to Dine
The NJABPsi Donate to Dine funds the Dr. Mel Gary Student Conference Presentation Award.
The maximum Student Conference Presentation Award will be $1,000. The actual amount will vary based on anticipated expenses, student membership in NJABPsi, conference location, etc. The decision of the judges is final.
Annually, this fundraiser will occur and invite NJABPsi members and friends to purchase $25 chances to participate in the "Donate to Dine" Restaurant Program and compete for a gift of $100 (maximum) to dine at a restaurant of the winner's choice. There is no geographical restriction for the restaurant.
The winner will dine at a chosen restaurant between July 1 and January 1.
