Dr. Lawrence Houston Scholarship Application

The New Jersey Chapter of The Association of Black Psychologists invites student members to apply for the Dr. Lawrence Houston Scholarship Fund by writing an essay on the topic below.

Essay Topic for 2022:

The COVID-19 pandemic was an exponential shock to much of the U.S., and exposed deep vulnerabilities across our fragmented health care system and levels of income. We know that people of African descent who suffer from racial and income inequalities, also suffered disproportionately from COVID-19 incidences and mortality. According to the CDC, while Black Americans comprise 13% of the country's population, they made up 30% of COVID-19 cases.  With all of the loss that was experienced during COVID-19 - particularly by people of African descent - it is not surprising that there are expanding mental health needs among this population.

From your perspective, what is the psychological impact you are seeing in your work/research with Black individuals due to the COVID-19 pandemic? How does your current work or your future plans as a psychologist support Black Mental Health and or address healing for Black people in these trying times?
